Raleigh's older neighborhoods like Boylan Heights and Glenwood sit on rolling ground where a wall can fail quietly for years and then let go all at once. From the 1920s bungalows near Dorothea Dix Park to the newer builds off Glenwood South, the red clay under these lots holds water and pushes hard against anything holding back a slope. A wall that looked fine last spring can be leaning by August.
We are Durham Retaining Wall, and Raleigh homeowners in 27601 call us because we know what the Piedmont clay does to a wall after a hurricane remnant or an ice storm. Our crews are fully insured and NCMA Segmental Retaining Wall Installer certified, and we handle everything from a small garden wall near Pullen Park to a full replacement on a steep lot in Oakwood.
Retaining Wall in Raleigh (27601)
Raleigh is a city of slopes. The ground falls away toward Walnut Creek and the Neuse River, and older streets like those in Cameron Park and Boylan Heights were cut into the hillside, leaving tight lots where a wall has to hold back a yard or a driveway. The soil is heavy red clay that swells when it gets wet and shrinks when it dries, and in the older neighborhoods you also find fieldstone and granite walls from the 1920s and 1930s that were built without drainage. Those walls are the ones that bow after a wet winter. Newer subdivisions on the east side have their own problems: builder-grade segmental block walls that were never engineered for the grade behind them, and timber walls from the 1980s and 1990s that are now rotting at the base.
Our team works Raleigh and the surrounding area from our Durham base, so we see the same soils and the same weather patterns across the region. We know that a wall on a ravine lot near the Raleigh Country Club needs a different drainage plan than a terraced backyard in Five Points, and we build accordingly.

How a Job Works in Raleigh
Step 1: You call us at (984) 538-7560 or send a message, and we schedule a free on-site assessment. We walk the property with you, look at the wall, check the grade and drainage, and talk through what you want the space to do. You get a written estimate with a clear scope, not a ballpark number.
Step 2: Once you approve, we pull the permits that apply through the City of Raleigh and schedule the work. On tight lots in older neighborhoods we plan access for equipment and materials, and if your subdivision has an HOA we coordinate with them on design and timing. Our crews handle the excavation, the base, the drainage, and the block or concrete, and we keep the site as orderly as the site allows.
Step 3: When the wall is done, we clean up, haul away debris, and walk the finished job with you. We leave your property clean and show you how the drainage works so you know what to watch for.
Pricing in Raleigh depends on the wall, the access, and the condition of what is there now. As a starting point, block and segmental retaining walls begin at $25 per square foot, concrete retaining walls at $35 per square foot, and timber walls at $20 per square foot. Retaining wall repair starts at $1,500, and leaning or collapsed wall repair starts at $2,500. Full replacement runs from $35 per square foot, and drainage work starts at $2,500. A wall on a steep lot with limited access will cost more than an open backyard, and emergency work after a storm is priced accordingly.
